I've inherited my father's book collection, which includes this edition of "The White Lamb" by Mela Meisner LIndsay. The book's description at Amazon.com offers this: "The title words, "Shukar Balan" and "White Lamb," are one and the same. This is what a tall, dark, and handsome Gypsy fiddler called Evaliz, a blond, sixteen-year-old Russian-German peasant girl, at a wedding dance under the stars in Russia, 1893. Shukar Balan: The White Lamb is the story of a philosophical father and a son who dreams only of the military - who wants to be a skilled horseman exactly like the Don Cossack. But mainly it is the story of Evaliz, the daughter, who wills her life to be different and who longs for America - that land of liberty and freedom which lies far across the sea. But many things have to happen before her longing is stilled."
Inside the book is this inscription by the author:

The is my paternal grandmother, Amalia "Mollie" Koleber Margheim. She's the mother of my dad, Ernest Margheim, to whom the book above was given and autographed by Amelia "Mela" Meisner Lindsay. I believe I can see a family resemblance in these two women, who were Germans from Russia and happen to be third cousins.

As I've researched these families, much to my surprise I discovered that Mela's husband, James Edward Lindsay, was born in Coal Creek, Fremont, Colorado, which is a small town just 10 miles from my current home.

I prepared this relationship chart that shows how my Grandma Mollie Margheim and Author Mela Meisner Lindsay are related:

I think I need to take some time in the next couple of days and read this book! I feel so blessed to have it and to know my family connection to the author, of whom I heard my grandmother speak many times. Grandma Mollie, this is for you.

Hello. I'm a librarian on Goodreads.com. I was adding Mela Meisner Lindsay's book, The White Lamb, and wanted to fill in a little information about your relative. I used the information from your blog there. If you'd like to change it or have me remove it, please let me know. It would be nice if we could add a photo of Mrs. Lindsay, but we'd need permission to do that. Thank you.

I just purchased a signed and inscribed copy of this great novel at a local thrift store in Georgetown, Texas. It is inscribed to a Pastor Jimmy Hinkhouse. A friend of the Mela Meisner Lindsay's family. I will send photos of my book after a reply. Thanks for the interesting post.
