Going to Church brings blessings, but this was unexpected

Most "Church-Attending" Christians would probably concur with my experience that blessings come into our lives when we attend church. But this morning my husband Larry Jamison and I had an experience of being blessed WHILE IN CHURCH. And this was quite unexpected. Our Scriptures, hymns and class lessons are available from an app supplied by our church. I turned on my ipad to follow a Sunday School class lesson and noticed that an email was just arriving. Since I use Gmail, the notice appears across the top of my screen as it arrives. This notice really caught my attention. The subject line said "Three Meals Men". When I read "Meals" I knew it was a genealogy email, so I was hooked and I knew that Larry's great grandmother was Clarissa Jane Meals, wife of Robert Alvey Jamison. They were the parents of his father's father, Paul Lester Jamison.

I quickly tapped on the email and saw this photo unfold.

At left is Samuel Wilbur Meals (1869-1939), in the middle is his nephew Nelson M. Meals, Jr. (1888-1945) and at right is the father of Nelson Meals, Dr. Nelson M. Meals (1848-1928). Samuel and Dr. Nelson M. Meals were the brothers of Larry's great-grandmother Clarissa Jane Meals, pictured at left.

The generous owner of this photo who shared it with us is the great granddaughter of Catherine Alnora (Lottie) Meals, who was a sister of Clarissa Jane Meals. I have previously shared these beautiful portraits of Lottie that Larry's cousin sent to us, but will post them again for your viewing pleasure.

Before our excitement at receiving the photo of the "three Meals men" had subsided, we found that another email had arrived from Larry's cousin. In the subject line was Catherine Studebaker Meals. Catherine is the THIRD GREAT-GRANDMOTHER of Larry! This is the first picture we have of any of our THIRD great grandparents!

Catherine's father was Joseph Studebaker, Jr. Here follows a very interesting story about Joseph:
In the Relationship Chart above, you can see the descendancy from Joseph Studebaker to my husband Larry Jamison.

We were truly blessed in our attendance at church today, but in a very unexpected way!

Learning fun facts about our Meals ancestors

Last week I posted a story here on my "Grace and Glory" blog about our good fortune of meeting a new cousin through the social collaboration of genealogy websites. Because we are communicating by email with this new cousin Anna, we continue to learn more interesting facts about extended family members.

Early this week Anna told us of a book available on Amazon called "West Virginia National Guard, 1898-1919" by Brian Kesterton.
Picture
This book is dedicated "in memory of Fred M. and Helen Jackson Cochran of Parkersburg, West Virginia...."  The author Brian Kesterton discovered a photo collection that once belonged to Fred Meals Cochran that had subsequently (somehow) been rescued out of a trash can by a man who sold them to an antique dealer in Athens, Ohio. The author purchased the rare photo collection and prepared this book with those photos as the pictorial history of this National Guard unit.

We're so happy to know of this book, of this photo collection, and to learn of our family relationship to this Fred Cochran. The chart below shows that Fred Cochran is a first cousin of Paul L. Jamison who is my husband's grandfather.
